What it’s like to work with me

Here’s what I think I have to offer in no particular order:

  1. Publishing experience

  2. A good eye for conflict. Internal and external conflict, whether it’s working or not.

  3. Concept. I can give you a pretty decent idea of where your book belongs in the marketplace. And I can help amplify a “mid” concept to make it more “high” concept.

  4. I’m fantastic at dialogue and characterization.

  5. I know my way around a character arc.

  6. I write amazing sex scenes and you, too, can write them if you want. I can help with that.

  7. Tension. Creating and maintaining tension is critical in romance. I’m good at pointing out where it could use some work.

  8. Pacing. Worried about a sagging middle? We can fix that. See #2 and #7.

  9. Line editing. Do not expect me not to tinker if you hand me your manuscript. I promise to always keep Track Changes on.

  10. Word count. I’m a total pro at spotting the fluff you don’t need, and pointing out some things you may be missing.

  11. Showing, not telling. I’ve got this totally figured out.

  12. Comma useage.

  13. Query Letter help

  14. Synopsis writing help

  15. Spotting inconsistencies

  16. Helping you learn to lean in to your own strengths

  17. Revealing crutch words and phrases.

All this and so much more….!

Here’s how we’ll begin to work together.

  1. I’ll read your full manuscript and give you a detailed edit letter pointing out areas of opportunity for improvement. The length of this letter will vary depending on how passionate I feel about certain topics.

  2. You’ll read the edit letter and give me your feedback on it. We’ll work together to make an editing plan.

  3. I may give you “homework.” For example, if you have timeline issues, I might have you make a calendar for the events which occur in your book so that you can spot the inconsistencies. Another common editing tool that can be useful is the “Reverse outline.” If you’ve never done one, I can teach you how. These are usually used for broad-scale revisions, and can be immensely helpful in telling the story you want to tell. There is no formula for what type of “homework” I’ll suggest. There are many, many tools and exercises that can help, and whatever I suggest would be specifically tailored to your book’s needs.

  4. You’ll do your part and revise the book. If you choose to, you can send back to me, and I WILL read the revision. I will likely offer an in-line edit at this point and a light proofread. At this point, your book should be close to ready to query or publish. If not, we’ll discuss.

  5. For Trad: I will help edit and improve your query and synopsis to help make your submission package the best it can be. I also will tell you who maybe not to query if I know anything about them.

  6. For Indie: I will help you edit your blurb and coach you through some of the next steps in the process. (determining whether to go wide, setting a pub date, and finding ARC readers, also all the other things you have to do, lol).

  7. If you’re not sick of me by now, I’ll continue to answer any questions you may have. I will always be your mentor, advocate, and cheerleader.
